Our History
Our History
GVAD was founded in 1926 by local Deaf leaders who saw the need to create a community where Deaf people could gather, support one another, and advocate for their rights. At a time when Deaf Canadians were largely excluded from mainstream society, GVAD became a space of belonging, leadership, and resilience.
Over the decades, GVAD has:
• Played a key role in advocating for interpreting services, captioning, and Deaf access
• Supported ASL preservation and education
• Partnered with other Deaf-led organizations to build a stronger provincial and national voice
In 2026, GVAD will proudly celebrate its 100th anniversary, honoring generations of Deaf leaders and volunteers who shaped our legacy.
Our Values
• Deaf Leadership – Led by and for the Deaf community
• Equity and Inclusion – Everyone deserves access and respect
• Cultural Pride – ASL and Deaf culture are central to who we are
• Volunteer Power – We are 100% volunteer-run and community-driven
• Transparency and Accountability – We listen, we grow, we improve
Looking Ahead
GVAD is growing and evolving. Our current priorities include:
• Hiring a part-time admin coordinator to support operations
• Increasing funding and partnerships
• Creating a permanent Deaf Centre in Greater Vancouver
• Expanding programs for Deaf youth, seniors, and the DeafBlind community
• Hosting a 100th Anniversary Gala and Deaf History Showcase in 2026
